In 1989, NFT was certified as a qualified applicant for approval of transport packages by the Science and Technology Agency based on national regulations. In 1991, HZ-type transport packages were certified for transporting spent fuel after NFT documented their safety analysis in accordance with IAEA standards. In total, 11 types of 79 transport packages have been approved for NFT to use in Japan, including nine types of spent fuel transport packages and two types of vitrified residue transport packages, of which one is currently under production.
