Cutting-Edge Engineering for the Safe Transport of Nuclear Fuel Materials

NFT's advanced and reliable technologies are grounded in extensive experience in spent nuclear fuel transport packages, from design to licensing, procurement, transport and maintenance.

1. ENGINEERING AND FABRICATION OF TRANSPORT PACKAGES

In the past, domestic electric power companies used packages designed by foreign countries for sending spent fuel to overseas reprocessing plants. Along with the start of transporting spent fuel to nuclear fuel cycle facilities in Japan, NFT developed six new types of transport packages in response to the requests of electrical power companies to further increase spent fuel carrying capacity for higher burnup fuel than previous types of packages. Fabrication of NFT-type packaging is done mainly at leading manufacturers in Japan, with joint participation by some U.S. and U.K. manufacturers for truly world-class quality.

2. NFT-TYPE TRANSPORT PACKAGES

NFT's transport packages include the following special attributes:

  1. Designed to accommodate not only current spent fuel specifications but also future high burnup fuel under the handling restrictions of every nuclear power plant in Japan.
  2. Complies with the Type B(M) requirements of national and international transport regulations.
  3. Common design philosophy over six types to improve efficiency in licensing, fabrication, handling, transportation and maintenance.
  4. Wet type cavity enables shorter loading and unloading operations resulting in a lower radiation dose to operators thanks to their sophisticated shielding design.

3. QUALITY MANAGEMENT BASED ON ISO 9001

ISO 9001

NFT has acquired ISO 9001 certification since establishing the Safety and Quality Management Department in 1999 to reinforce quality and safety management in all aspects of transportation. The Company takes stringent measures in managing the design, licensing, handling and transport of packages, and the fabrication, approval and maintenance of packaging, and all of these processes are based on ISO 9001 procedures.

From 2002, we upgraded to the 2000 edition of ISO 9001 for quality management systems, and ongoing efforts are aimed at improving work processes.
